Electrical Engineer / Electrical Tester – Defence Estate
Location: RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire – with occasional travel to RAF Welford
Salary: £40,000–£43,000 + On-Call Allowance + Overtime
Contract: Permanent | Full Time
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:30pm (40 hours per week) + On-Call Rota
The Opportunity
We are currently supporting a leading Defence facilities management and engineering provider in the recruitment of two Electrical Engineers / Electrical Testers to join an established engineering team supporting RAF Fairford and RAF Welford.
This is an excellent opportunity for qualified electricians looking for a secure, long-term position within a technically interesting environment, combining electrical testing and inspection, planned maintenance, reactive fault finding and minor installation works.
Based predominantly at RAF Fairford, you will help maintain electrical infrastructure across a varied Defence estate incorporating commercial buildings, operational facilities, aircraft hangars, domestic accommodation and specialist infrastructure.
The Role
Working as part of the site engineering team, you will be responsible for maintaining safe, compliant and operational electrical systems across the estate.
Your responsibilities will include:
The position also provides exposure to some particularly interesting Defence infrastructure. This can include electrical testing activities within specialist explosive storage environments associated with munitions and other Defence assets.
Experience working with Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) would be particularly advantageous due to the operational airfield environment, although this is not essential.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for experienced electricians with a strong background in electrical maintenance, testing and fault finding.
You should hold:
An NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation would be highly desirable.
A City & Guilds 2391 Inspection & Testing qualification, or equivalent, would also be advantageous but is not essential.
Experience within commercial, industrial, Defence, aviation, critical infrastructure or large estate environments would be particularly beneficial.
Previous experience working within large buildings, hangars, operational facilities or other technically complex environments would also transfer well.
Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) experience or qualifications would be highly desirable but are not essential.
Experience or qualifications relating to ESTS 6 explosive storage environments would also be advantageous.
Due to the nature of the environment, applicants must also be eligible to obtain the required UK Security Clearance (SC).
Working Pattern & On-Call
The standard working week is 40 hours, Monday to Friday, 8:00am–4:30pm.
You will also participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota, with the frequency dependent on the size of the engineering team. On-call cover runs from 4:30pm to 8:00am and includes weekends, with engineers required to respond to emergency callouts within one hour.
The on-call package includes:
This provides additional earning potential on top of the basic salary.
Salary & Benefits
The position offers a salary of £40,000–£43,000, alongside:
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to join an established engineering operation supporting critical UK Defence infrastructure, offering long-term stability alongside a more technically varied environment than a typical commercial maintenance position.
For an experienced Electrical Engineer or Electrical Tester looking for a permanent position combining testing, inspection, maintenance and fault finding, while gaining exposure to specialist Defence and airfield infrastructure, this represents an excellent next step.
