Our Expertise

our expertise.

UK sustainability and ESG hiring has fractured into distinct specialisms. ESG reporting and disclosure driven by TCFD, ISSB S1 and S2, CSRD exposure and the UK's incoming Sustainability Disclosure Standards. Net zero and carbon management underpinned by SBTi, the GHG Protocol and PAS 2060 claims. Certification-led sustainability assessment for BREEAM, LEED, WELL and Passivhaus. Embodied and whole-life carbon under PAS 2080, RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment and CIBSE TM65. Circular economy and biodiversity net gain. And the corporate and transaction-side ESG roles from the Big Four and specialist advisories.

Our Sustainability & ESG desk recruits across all six of those practitioner tracks plus the corporate and due-diligence layer. IEMA-aligned throughout (AIEMA, PIEMA, MIEMA, FIEMA and CEnv), with BREEAM AP and Assessor, LEED AP, WELL AP and Passivhaus Designer credentials verified. We work across the major UK multi-disciplinary sustainability consultancies (including Jacobs), specialist environmental and ESG consultancies, BREEAM-specialist building services practices, the Big Four ESG advisory teams, and the in-house corporate sustainability functions at FTSE-listed entities.

Why It Matters

why specialist UK sustainability and ESG recruitment matters.

UK sustainability and ESG hiring now sits against ISSB S1/S2 outpacing TCFD-trained reporters, Scope 3 supply-chain carbon emerging as the net-zero bottleneck, and PAS 2080 plus RICS Whole Life Carbon moving from advisory to mandatory. Specialist desk knowledge reads the right credential stack against the right mandate.

Moston read the brief correctly. ISSB is not TCFD with a new cover. We saw candidates who had genuinely authored disclosures under the new standards, not just consumed training on them.

ISSB S1 and S2 disclosure is outpacing the TCFD-only reporting workforce

The International Sustainability Standards Board published S1 (general sustainability-related disclosures) and S2 (climate-related disclosures) in 2023, and UK-endorsed Sustainability Disclosure Standards are bringing them into mandatory territory for listed entities. TCFD-trained consultants cannot automatically deliver ISSB-aligned reporting. The pipeline between the two is real, and practitioners who can genuinely author ISSB-aligned disclosures are the tightest ESG reporting specialism on our desk in 2026.

Find Sustainability Talent

Scope 3 supply-chain carbon is the practical bottleneck in net zero teams

SBTi-aligned net zero targets, CSRD Scope 3 exposure for UK entities with EU subsidiaries, and the tightening focus on Category 1 (purchased goods and services) and Category 11 (use of sold products) have pulled carbon managers into supply-chain analytics work that very few practitioners have delivered end-to-end. GHG Protocol Scope 3 fluency, not Scope 1 and 2, is the credential that closes senior net zero briefs in 2026.

Our Approach

how we solve UK sustainability and ESG hiring.

Six practitioner tracks plus corporate and transaction layer, IEMA and credential-literate assessment, and a clean separation from design-side sustainability. The baseline a sustainability and ESG recruitment agency has to meet.

01

Six practitioner tracks plus corporate and transaction layer

UK sustainability and ESG hiring splits cleanly by the specialism the practitioner delivers. Our desk covers all of them:

  • ESG Reporting and Disclosure

TCFD, ISSB S1 and S2, CSRD exposure work, GRI, SASB, CDP submissions and the incoming UK Sustainability Disclosure Standards.

  • Net Zero and Carbon

SBTi-aligned transition planning, GHG Protocol Scope 1/2/3 carbon accounting, PAS 2060 carbon neutrality claims, climate risk and transition risk quantification.

  • BREEAM, LEED, WELL and Passivhaus Certification

BREEAM Accredited Professional (AP) and Assessor, LEED AP and Green Associate, WELL AP and Passivhaus Designer/Certifier roles across new-build and in-use certification.

  • Circular Economy and Embodied Carbon

PAS 2080 carbon management, RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment, CIBSE TM65, LETI and UKGBC-aligned embodied carbon practice, material passports and circularity.

  • Sustainability Strategy and Advisory

Heads of Sustainability, sustainability strategy consultants, IEMA Practitioner and Chartered Members leading corporate transitions and net zero roadmaps.

  • ESG in Corporate, Due Diligence and Transaction

Big Four ESG advisory, environmental due diligence, contaminated land, EIA, biodiversity net gain and ESG-in-M&A practice.

Distinct from design-side net zero, cross-linked to BSE

The design side of sustainability sits on our Building Services Engineering desk. This page covers strategy, reporting, assessment and transition planning. The boundary is clean:

  • BSE desk covers the design engineer building low-carbon mechanical, electrical and public health systems

Part L 2021, Future Buildings Standard, CP1 2020 heat networks, TM59 overheating, IES VE and EDSL Tas dynamic simulation.

  • This Sustainability & ESG desk covers the strategist, assessor, certifier and reporter

BREEAM APs and Assessors, LEED APs, carbon managers, ESG analysts, sustainability directors, ISSB and TCFD authors, PAS 2080 whole life carbon leads.

  • Candidates cross the line regularly, particularly into Associate Sustainability Consultant and Head of Sustainability roles. We manage those transitions across both desks.

  • For the design-side roles on sustainability (dynamic simulation, Part L submissions, CP1 heat network design) our Building Services Engineering page is the primary brief.

Case Study

FTSE 250 corporate sustainability team

A FTSE 250 corporate needed to build a four-strong ESG reporting capability covering ISSB S1 and S2 authoring, CSRD exposure mapping, SBTi-aligned target validation and Scope 3 supply-chain carbon. Every hire needed live TCFD-to-ISSB transition evidence and IEMA membership. We delivered the full team inside eleven weeks against a reporting-specialist market that was noticeably tighter than when the brief opened.

Why Clients Partner With Us

why UK corporates, consultancies and housebuilders choose a specialist sustainability and ESG recruitment agency.

We recruit into UK sustainability and ESG every day. The IEMA membership pathway, BREEAM AP and Assessor routes, LEED AP and WELL AP credentials, TCFD and the ISSB S1/S2 disclosure regime, the UK Sustainability Disclosure Standards, SBTi-aligned net zero strategy, the GHG Protocol, PAS 2080 whole life carbon and RICS WLCA, CIBSE TM65 embodied carbon, and the biodiversity net gain regime. Employers searching for specialist sustainability recruiters, and candidates searching sustainability recruitment agencies, find the same desk.

  • ISSB and TCFD transition-literate: ISSB S1 and S2 reporting capability is genuinely scarce. We screen CVs for live authoring evidence under the new standards, not just attendance on transition training. That distinction alone filters the noisiest band of ESG reporting candidates.
  • Scope 3 and SBTi depth, not Scope 1 and 2 surface: Senior net zero briefs live or die on Scope 3 supply-chain carbon and SBTi-validated target delivery. We check Category 1 and Category 11 track record and validated-target delivery, not generic carbon awareness.
  • Clean separation from design-side sustainability: Our Building Services Engineering desk covers design-side net zero (Part L 2021, Future Buildings Standard, CP1 heat networks, dynamic simulation, TM59). Our Sustainability & ESG desk covers strategy, reporting, certification and transition. Candidates and clients never land on the wrong desk.
  • Consultancy, corporate and transaction coverage under one partner: Major sustainability consultancies, Big Four ESG advisory, BREEAM-specialist practices, FTSE-listed in-house teams and the ESG-in-M&A population. Six practitioner tracks plus corporate and transaction layer, one desk.

FAQs

common sustainability and ESG recruitment questions.

Direct answers on IEMA, ISSB S1 and S2, TCFD, SBTi, GHG Protocol, PAS 2080, RICS Whole Life Carbon, BREEAM, LEED, WELL and Passivhaus.

IEMA is the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, the UK and Ireland professional body for environment and sustainability practitioners. Its grades are AIEMA (Associate), PIEMA (Practitioner), MIEMA (Full Member) and FIEMA (Fellow), with Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) status awarded via the Society for the Environment. IEMA membership is the most widely-held professional credential for UK sustainability and environmental consultants, and is commonly required on senior sustainability briefs.

The International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) was established by the IFRS Foundation to create a global baseline for sustainability-related disclosure. S1 is the general sustainability-related disclosures standard. S2 is the climate-related disclosures standard, which incorporates the TCFD recommendations while extending them. TCFD-trained reporters do not automatically deliver ISSB-compliant disclosures because S1 and S2 require broader governance, strategy, risk management and metrics disclosure than TCFD alone. UK entities are moving toward mandatory ISSB-aligned reporting via the UK Sustainability Disclosure Standards, and this transition is a significant driver of ESG reporting hiring in 2026.

SBTi is the Science Based Targets initiative, a partnership between CDP, UN Global Compact, WRI and WWF. It defines and validates company net zero targets aligned to the latest climate science, specifically the 1.5 degrees Celsius pathway. An SBTi-validated target involves Scope 1, Scope 2 and often Scope 3 commitments assessed against the Net Zero Standard. Corporate net zero hiring, particularly at Carbon Manager and Head of Sustainability level, is now commonly scoped around SBTi-validated or SBTi-committed targets. Practitioners with live validation experience are in strong demand.

PAS 2080 is the Publicly Available Specification for carbon management in buildings and infrastructure, setting a process-based standard for reducing whole life carbon across construction and infrastructure projects. The RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment (second edition) is the RICS professional standard for assessing whole life carbon in buildings, including embodied and operational carbon modules (A1-A5, B1-B7, C1-C4 per the EN 15978 framework). PAS 2080 is the management process; RICS WLCA is the assessment method. Many UK public-sector and major commercial projects now require both. We screen for live delivery evidence under both.

BREEAM AP (Accredited Professional) is the BRE credential for sustainability consultants who advise on BREEAM strategy during design, but who do not themselves assess projects. BREEAM Assessor (also called Accredited Assessor) is licensed to carry out the formal BREEAM assessment leading to certification. Both are issued by BRE. Many senior sustainability consultants hold both. On UK commercial and institutional briefs, BREEAM AP is the more commonly-requested credential; Assessor is more common at specialist BREEAM consultancies.

The GHG Protocol (Greenhouse Gas Protocol) is the global accounting and reporting standard for corporate greenhouse gas emissions, developed by WRI and WBCSD. It defines Scope 1 (direct emissions from owned sources), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heat and cooling) and Scope 3 (all other indirect emissions across the value chain, split into 15 categories including purchased goods, business travel, and use of sold products). Scope 3 commonly represents 70 to 90 per cent of a typical company's carbon footprint but is also the hardest to quantify. Scope 3 depth, particularly Categories 1 and 11, is the single hardest competence to hire for on senior net zero briefs.

CIBSE TM65 is the CIBSE Technical Memorandum on embodied carbon in building services, providing a methodology for calculating the embodied carbon of building services products where manufacturer environmental product declarations (EPDs) are unavailable. It sits alongside RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment and PAS 2080 in the UK embodied carbon toolkit, and is commonly used by building services sustainability consultants and BREEAM teams. TM65 fluency is increasingly a requirement on whole life carbon briefs.

CSRD is the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, a 2022 EU directive mandating sustainability reporting aligned to the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) for in-scope entities. UK companies are not directly within scope, but UK entities with EU subsidiaries, EU listings, or meeting EU-threshold tests for their EU presence may be required to report under CSRD. This cross-border exposure, combined with the UK's own Sustainability Disclosure Standards programme, is shaping the hiring market for ESG reporting specialists who can cover both regimes.

Broad 2026 market ranges. Sustainability Consultant (Engineer-level) 32 to 45 thousand. Senior Sustainability Consultant 45 to 62. Associate Sustainability Consultant 65 to 85. Associate Director 80 to 105. Sustainability Director and Partner 100 to 160 plus. Head of Sustainability (in-house corporate) 75 to 130 depending on entity scale. Carbon Manager 45 to 68. Senior Carbon Manager 65 to 85. Net Zero Programme Director 90 to 140. ESG Analyst 35 to 55. ESG Manager 55 to 80. Head of ESG 80 to 140. BREEAM Assessor (experienced) 45 to 65. Passivhaus Designer 50 to 75. PAS 2080 / Whole Life Carbon Lead 55 to 80. London and corporate in-house premiums apply. Day rates for contract roles run 350 to 900.

Yes. We cover the full UK sustainability consultancy tier (including Jacobs), specialist environmental and ESG consultancies, BREEAM-specialist building services practices, the Big Four and mid-tier ESG advisory teams, and the in-house corporate sustainability functions at FTSE-listed entities, housebuilders and REITs. Candidates regularly cross these channels and we manage the moves accordingly.

Yes, all four. BREEAM AP and BREEAM Accredited Assessor (BRE). LEED AP and LEED Green Associate (USGBC/GBCI). WELL AP (IWBI). Certified Passivhaus Designer and Passivhaus Certifier (Passivhaus Institut/Trust). We verify credential currency and live project delivery evidence at shortlist stage, not just the presence of the acronym on the CV.

Yes, across all three. Permanent placements are the majority volume. Contract cover is common on ISSB transition peaks, CSRD readiness projects, CDP submission windows and BREEAM assessment surge periods. Interim Head of Sustainability and Director of Sustainability placements are used for team integration after acquisition, new-programme stand-up, and regulatory response on ESG disclosure.
