About this Role
Lead and develop landscape design solutions across a national development portfolio, creating attractive, functional external spaces that support planning approval, enhance biodiversity and promote wellbeing.
Working with Land, Planning, Design and Technical teams, alongside external consultants, you will help shape sites from initial feasibility through to planning approval. Your proposals will maximise site potential, deliver high-quality placemaking and achieve efficient biodiversity outcomes.
You will also help establish and grow an in-house landscape function, improving design quality, consistency and programme certainty while reducing reliance on external consultants.
Key responsibilities
Lead landscape design from site feasibility through to planning submission, producing site appraisals, landscape strategies, concept plans and detailed proposals.
Provide landscape and visual advice during site acquisition and feasibility assessments as required.
Work with Planning and Design teams to develop site layouts and masterplans that respond to planning requirements.
Support Biodiversity Net Gain strategies with ecologists and environmental consultants.
Prepare and coordinate landscape planning documents, including landscape strategies, design statements and supporting reports.
Review and manage external landscape consultants where specialist support is needed.
Coordinate landscape, drainage and biodiversity requirements with the in-house Technical team and its consultants.
Develop consistent landscape specifications, details and design principles across the portfolio.
Advise on tree constraints, planting strategies, green infrastructure and public realm design.
Attend design reviews, planning workshops and meetings with local authorities as required.
Carry out site visits during construction to check compliance with landscape requirements.
Ensure proposals reflect planning policy, local design guidance and emerging environmental legislation.
Support sustainability, placemaking and biodiversity objectives, keeping up to date with industry standards and best practice.
About you
You are passionate about creating high-quality landscapes and understand how good design supports planning success and improves people’s experience of a place. You are comfortable working within a development model built around standard designs and integrated in-house delivery.
You can work independently and collaborate across disciplines, balancing creativity with commercial and planning considerations. Proactive and organised, you can manage multiple projects and competing deadlines in a fast paced development environment.
Knowledge and experience
Strong understanding of landscape design, planning policy and placemaking principles.
Experience preparing landscape proposals for residential, healthcare, commercial or mixed-use developments is desirable.
Understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain requirements.
Awareness of current and emerging drainage strategies, including Lead Local Flood Authority requirements, and their implications for landscape design.
Knowledge of planning application processes and supporting documentation.
Strong communication and presentation skills.
Commercial awareness and an understanding of development viability.
A collaborative approach and the ability to influence design outcomes across disciplines.
Qualifications and technical skills
Degree in Landscape Architecture or a related discipline.
A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant industry experience.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite.
Full UK driving licence.
Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute status is desirable but not essential.
Experience with Revit, SketchUp and visualisation software is desirable.
Working relationships
Internally, you will work with the Design, Planning, Technical and Construction teams. External relationships include local planning authorities, landscape consultants, ecologists, arboricultural consultants, planning consultants, local stakeholders and community representatives.
