The Opportunity
We are working in partnership with a leading organisation responsible for the management and maintenance of a large, complex UK Defence estate to recruit an experienced Gas Responsible Person (GRP) covering eight sites across North Yorkshire.
This is a specialist technical compliance position, taking responsibility for the safe management, operation and assurance of gas systems and infrastructure across a diverse portfolio of operational sites.
You will act as a key technical point of contact for gas safety, providing specialist guidance to engineering and maintenance teams while ensuring gas activities are undertaken safely and in accordance with statutory legislation, MOD requirements and approved safe systems of work.
The position offers a mixture of home working and regular travel across sites in the North Yorkshire area, making it well suited to an experienced gas professional looking to move into a broader technical assurance and compliance role.
The Role
As Gas Responsible Person, you will:
- Provide specialist technical leadership and guidance on gas safety, compliance and safe working practices across eight sites.
- Ensure gas networks, installations and associated assets are operated and maintained in accordance with relevant legislation, industry standards and Defence requirements.
- Support the implementation, maintenance and review of Gas Safety Management Plans and associated procedures.
- Oversee safe systems of work for gas-related activities, including permits, risk assessments, method statements and safety documentation.
- Assess and monitor the competence of Gas Skilled Persons and contractors undertaking work across the estate.
- Provide technical assurance over planned maintenance, reactive works and gas-related projects.
- Review standards of work and identify any compliance gaps, risks or corrective actions required.
- Provide technical input into gas infrastructure projects, modifications and maintenance programmes.
- Work collaboratively with engineering teams, contractors, suppliers, clients and other stakeholders to maintain high standards of gas safety.
- Support investigations, risk meetings and technical reviews relating to gas systems and infrastructure.
- Provide specialist advice where operational or emergency gas issues arise.
- Help drive continuous improvement in gas compliance, technical governance and safety performance across the estate.
About You
We are looking for an experienced gas professional with a strong technical background across commercial and/or domestic gas systems, ideally with experience operating within a large, multi-site or highly regulated environment.
You should have:
- Relevant gas qualifications and demonstrable industry experience.
- Strong knowledge of gas safety legislation, compliance requirements and safe systems of work.
- Experience working with gas distribution networks and gas utilisation systems.
- Knowledge and practical experience of LPG installations.
- Experience producing or reviewing risk assessments, method statements, permits and technical safety documentation.
- The ability to assess the competence and standards of engineers, contractors and other gas personnel.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills and the confidence to provide specialist guidance to operational teams.
- Good stakeholder management skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with engineers, managers, contractors and clients.
- The ability to manage your own workload while supporting multiple operational sites.
- A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel regularly across the North Yorkshire area.
Experience of Gas Safety Management Plans, Safe Control of Operations, SHEA Gas, escape/locate/repair activities and CDM Regulations would be particularly advantageous.
Previous experience within Defence/MOD, utilities, infrastructure, facilities management or another safety-critical regulated environment would also be beneficial.
Due to the nature of the estate, you will need to be able to achieve and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance.
