About this Role

We are seeking an experienced Gas Responsible Person to join our Compliance team, providing expert technical leadership and ensuring the safe, compliant operation of gas systems across a diverse and nationally significant estate.

This is an opportunity to become the recognised technical authority for gas compliance within your area, ensuring natural gas, LPG and associated systems are managed safely and in accordance with statutory legislation, Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) requirements and organisational policies. Your expertise will play a vital role in protecting people, maintaining operational capability and ensuring the Defence estate remains safe and compliant.

About the Role

You will oversee gas compliance activities across the estate, ensuring statutory inspections, servicing and preventative maintenance programmes are delivered effectively and in line with required standards. You will monitor performance against key compliance requirements and undertake audits and assurance reviews to identify areas for improvement, ensure corrective actions are completed and maintain robust technical governance.

Working closely with operational teams, contractors and project managers, you will provide specialist advice on gas infrastructure, reviewing technical procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work. You will support the design, installation, commissioning and modification of new and existing gas systems, ensuring appropriate standards and controls are applied throughout their lifecycle.

You will also investigate gas-related incidents, establish root causes and recommend practical improvements to strengthen safety, reliability and compliance. A key part of the role will be identifying and managing gas-related risks, maintaining accurate compliance records and providing technical support during emergency situations and operational incidents.

You will monitor high-risk assets and ensure appropriate control measures are in place, providing technical guidance for planned works and other activities where gas safety is a significant consideration.

Working collaboratively with contractors and supply chain partners, you will verify competence, monitor performance and ensure gas-related works are undertaken by appropriately qualified and competent personnel. You will maintain effective compliance records, produce assurance reports and present technical findings, risks and recommendations to senior stakeholders.

As a trusted technical expert, you will coach and support operational teams, helping to improve gas safety awareness and develop a culture where safety, compliance and continuous improvement are embedded in day-to-day operations.

The role offers a combination of home working, site visits and regular travel across the Defence estate. Occasional out-of-hours support may be required for critical compliance issues, together with participation in a one-in-four on-call rota.

About You

You will have significant experience managing gas compliance across large property, infrastructure or facilities management portfolios, together with a thorough understanding of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, Gas Safety Management Regulations, relevant British Standards and wider health and safety legislation.

You will be confident delivering compliance assurance, undertaking technical audits and making informed, risk-based decisions within a highly regulated environment. You will be comfortable providing authoritative technical advice while maintaining strong governance and accountability.

You will be a collaborative and confident communicator, able to build effective relationships with operational teams, contractors and senior stakeholders. Strong communication, stakeholder management and reporting skills are essential, alongside the ability to analyse complex technical information, solve problems and drive continuous improvement.

You will hold current ACS Gas qualifications appropriate to the scope of the role, together with a recognised Mechanical or Building Services qualification such as NVQ Level 3, HNC, HND or equivalent. Membership of a relevant professional body, or a willingness to work towards professional accreditation, is also required.
