About this Role

We are seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to carry out on-site inspections and condition surveys of existing steel fire escape staircases across multiple properties/sites. The role will involve assessing structural condition, identifying defects, measuring and recording findings, taking site photographs, and producing clear written reports with recommendations for repair, strengthening, or replacement where required.

The successful candidate must be comfortable working independently, managing site visits, and using digital systems to upload reports, photographs, and survey documentation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct structural surveys and inspections of external and internal steel fire staircases.
  • Assess condition of steelwork, connections, landings, treads, handrails, fixings, corrosion, movement, and general stability.
  • Identify defects, deterioration, damage, or non-compliance issues.
  • Take accurate dimensions, notes, and photographic records during site visits.
  • Prepare professional written survey reports with findings and recommendations.
  • Provide structural advice regarding repairs, strengthening works, or replacement requirements.
  • Upload reports, photographs, and documentation to client portals / cloud systems.
  • Liaise with clients, site contacts, and internal teams where required.
  • Manage own diary and travel between survey locations.
  • Ensure surveys are completed safely and in line with relevant health & safety standards.


Required Skills & Experience

  • Degree-qualified Structural Engineer or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience inspecting steel structures or staircases.
  • Good understanding of steelwork behaviour, corrosion, load paths, and structural defects.
  • Ability to write concise, professional technical reports.
  • Competent with IT systems including Microsoft Office, tablets, mobile apps, cloud storage, and photo uploads.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites.


Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer status (MIStructE / MICE) or working toward chartership.
  • Experience with fire escape staircases / access structures.
  • Knowledge of relevant British Standards / Building Regulations.
  • IPAF / PASMA / Working at Height awareness.
  • Experience working in occupied commercial or residential buildings.
