About this Role

Operations Manager

At Amey we design, deliver, protect and maintain the infrastructure that keeps the UK moving. This Operations Manager role sits at the heart of that mission: you will turn strategy into safe, reliable, carbon-reducing delivery across live contracts so communities, clients and colleagues can depend on us every day. Your decisions will protect people, assets and our shared future.

Performance Objectives

  • Deliver contract KPIs (availability, response, quality, carbon) at or above target within 90 days of joining, then sustain them quarter after quarter.
  • Lead daily and weekly operational huddles so planned and reactive work is sequenced, resourced and closed without safety or compliance gaps.
  • Cut unplanned downtime and waste by 15% in the first year through data-led root-cause action and lean process change.
  • Coach supervisors and front-line teams so Zero Harm behaviours and Amey’s Integrated Management System become habit, not checklist.
  • Own commercial performance: control labour, plant and materials so the account meets or beats margin while protecting client outcomes.
  • Build trusted relationships with client operational leads; resolve issues at peer level and feed insight into work-winning and continuous improvement.
  • Stand up and test emergency, winter and incident rotas so the network stays open when it matters most.

Environment & Resources

You will report to the Contract or Regional Operations Director and lead a mixed team of supervisors, operatives and specialists on a long-term highways, rail, justice or facilities account. You will have access to Amey’s digital platforms, plant, supply chain and H&S specialists, plus a defined operational budget. Hybrid and flexible patterns are available once delivery is stable. Platinum Investors in People support and two Social Impact Days come as standard.

Essential Qualifications

  • Proven record of running multi-site or multi-trade operations on infrastructure or facilities contracts, delivering measurable safety, service and cost results.
  • Ability to read performance data, spot variance and drive corrective action without waiting for instruction.
  • People-leadership experience: coaching mixed-skill teams, managing rotas, and holding standards under operational pressure.
  • Working knowledge of CDM, relevant H&S legislation and client-specific security or environmental rules.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to be visible on site and in the field.

Role Selling Points

  • Work on critical national assets with a company that combines engineering, operations and decarbonisation in one integrated offer.
  • Clear progression into Contract, Regional or Account leadership, backed by funded development programmes.
  • Long-term, stable contracts that let you plan a career, not a project.
  • Inclusive culture, affinity networks and a genuine commitment that everyone deserves the chance to shine.
