The Electrical Maintenance Technician is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant maintenance of electrical systems and associated assets across the site. The post holder will contribute to the delivery of statutory, planned, and reactive maintenance, ensuring systems and services operate at an optimal standard. The role requires proactive engagement with safety systems, customer liaison, subcontractor supervision, and technical problem solving.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety, and Compliance
Follow safe systems of work at all times, taking reasonable care of personal health and safety and that of colleagues.
Eliminate or reduce risks where practicable by complying with site safety rules and instructions.
Report hazards promptly to management to enable corrective action.
Undertake and comply with site permit-to-work systems, ensuring permits and associated paperwork are completed accurately.
Support safety inspections, incident investigations, and breakdown reviews as directed by supervisors.
Maintenance and Repair
Carry out electrical maintenance and repair tasks as directed by the Electrical Team Leader, Maintenance Supervisor, or Manager.
Maintain and repair electrical systems and associated equipment safely and effectively.
Proactively identify remedial or reactive maintenance requirements, ensuring all work is logged on the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
Ensure documentation of maintenance activities complies with GxP or other regulatory standards, where applicable.
Support the procurement and management of spare parts, consumables, and tools required for maintenance.
Technical Knowledge and Systems
Develop and maintain a working knowledge of site systems, including (but not limited to):
Electrical infrastructure
Lighting systems
Fire alarms
Motor controls
IT and telephone data systems
Pumps and motors
Building Management Systems (BMS)
Compressed air systems
Chilled water systems
Steam boilers and associated plant
Maintain plant and services to ensure safe, efficient, and economic operation.
Ensure asset registers and statutory/non-statutory logs are accurate and up to date.
Subcontractor and Team Liaison
Ensure all subcontractors are inducted in site systems and safety requirements prior to commencing work.
Supervise subcontracted works, ensuring compliance with legislation, site procedures, and client quality standards.
Communicate effectively with colleagues, management, and clients, providing a professional service at all times.
Adopt a proactive approach to customer liaison, escalating concerns promptly where necessary.
Planning and Performance
Ensure compliance with planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules, reactive tasks, and service-level agreements (SLAs).
Ensure effective use of operation and maintenance manuals (O&Ms) and compliance with quality procedures.
Support development of best practice in electrical maintenance across the site.
Take ownership of issues, adopting a problem-solving mindset and ensuring timely resolution.
Skills and Training
Essential:
Completed electrical apprenticeship (City & Guilds/NVQ or equivalent).
Inspection and testing qualifications.
18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS7671).
Ability to make sound decisions and manage multiple concurrent tasks.
Desirable:
Authorised Person (AP) – Low Voltage (LV) / High Voltage (HV).
HV switching competency.
ATEX awareness/qualification.
IPAF certification.
Confined space entry qualification.
IOSH “Working Safely” or equivalent.
Experience
Essential:
Demonstrable experience of working with electrical systems in a commercial or industrial environment.
Knowledge and practical experience of permit-to-work systems and Risk Assessments/Method Statements (RAMS).
Desirable:
Computer skills and familiarity with CMMS.
Experience of managing subcontractors.
