A major organisation is seeking an experienced Area Manager to lead maintenance and response operations across a portfolio of Defence establishments. This is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring safe, compliant, and high-quality service delivery in a complex, high-risk environment. The position requires strong technical expertise, excellent stakeholder management, and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams while maintaining operational excellence.
Role Overview
The Area Manager acts as the operational lead for their designated region, ensuring all statutory, regulatory, and Ministry of Defence requirements are met. They oversee maintenance and response activities, ensuring all works are completed safely, efficiently, and in line with relevant legislation, JSP standards, and internal Health, Safety and Environmental procedures.
A major part of the role includes coordinating supply chain partners, ensuring that all operatives are suitably qualified and experienced, reviewing RAMS, and overseeing safe systems of work. The Area Manager ensures all tasks are accurately recorded, monitored, and closed out within the CAFM system and may act as Method Statement Coordinator to maintain compliance across sites.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain full oversight of maintenance and response activities across Defence sites.
Ensure compliance with statutory legislation, JSP frameworks, and internal HSE standards.
Oversee safe working processes for activities such as Working at Height, Confined Spaces, and other specialist areas.
Act as Asbestos or Legionella Responsible Person where required, ensuring adherence to relevant management plans.
Manage risk registers, identify and escalate defects, and ensure timely resolution of issues.
Lead, coordinate, and develop multidisciplinary teams, including Skilled Persons and site staff.
Promote and reinforce a proactive safety culture across all operations.
Act as a primary point of contact for end users, handling customer requests and providing technical guidance.
Build productive working relationships with Defence stakeholders, including DIO and Heads of Establishment.
Support the identification and development of additional works and contribute to forward maintenance planning.
Balance operational delivery with commercial and financial awareness, ensuring value for money and contractual compliance.
Use data, digital tools, and performance metrics to drive effective decision-making and continuous improvement.
What You'll Bring
HNC (or higher) in a Building, Mechanical, or related technical discipline.
Strong experience in planned and reactive maintenance, plus small-works/project delivery.
Willingness to undertake Authorised Person responsibilities (e.g., Working at Height, Confined Spaces, Asbestos, Legionella).
Participation in an out-of-hours on-call rota.
Membership of a relevant professional body and/or asset management qualifications (e.g., IAM) are beneficial.
Proven leadership ability, with strong communication skills and the confidence to make sound decisions under pressure.
Technical credibility, excellent organisational skills, and a commitment to delivering safe and compliant services.
